KALLAKURICHI: A BJP official was arrested Tuesday in Kallakurichi district in Tamil Nadu, accused of assaulting an employee of a private financial company, who came to recover loans obtained by his wife.
The arrested man has been identified as S Maruthu alias Irudhiyaraj, 46, who is an official with the Ulundurpet municipal unit of the BJP.
Police said Maruthu’s wife, who is a member of a women’s support group, obtained a loan from a private finance company but failed to repay the loan payments on time. A private company employee, B Balaguru, 27, traveled to the town of Maruthu on Tuesday to collect overdue loans.
Upon learning that Balaguru had come to collect the loans, Maruthu attacked him and brutally attacked him with a log. Balaguru was injured and rushed to Ulundurpet government general hospital.
He filed a complaint with Ulundurpet Police, who registered a case under sections 294-B (obscene acts and chanting), 323 (punishment for willful injury), 324 (willful injury by means of weapons or of dangerous means), 341 (punishment for unjustified duress) and 506 (2) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested Maruthu.
